Brass sculpture of gods & goddesses comes from norther part of India. Artifacts In Metal Craft For Indian Style Home Decoration. Lord Buddha, the founder of the Buddhist religion is called Buddha Shakyamuni. Shakya is the name of the royal family into which he was born, and Muni means Able One. Buddha Skakyamuni was born as a royal prince in 624 BC in a place called Lumbini in northern India to Queen Mayadevi and King Shuddhodana. As a young prince, he mastered all the traditional arts and sciences without needing any instruction. He knew sixty four different languages, each with their own alphabet, and he was also very skilled at mathematics. On his fathers request, he joined a school where, in addition to various academic subjects, he became skilled at sports such as martial arts and archery. Sometimes he would go into the city of his fathers kingdom to see how the people lived. During these visits, he met many old people and sick people, and on one occasion, he saw a corpse. These encounters left a deep impression on his mind and led him to realize that all living beings without exception have to experience the sufferings of birth, sickness, ageing and death. He realized that they experience these sufferings not just once, but repeatedly, in life after life without cessation.

The first one is Moradabad, where the craft has a history as long as four hundred years and another one is Aligarh that is newer as compared to the former. In both the places initially the craftsmen were called thathera. The Aligarh craftsmen perfected the art of fine sculpting over a period of time. The main themes remain the Hindu gods and goddesses, animals and decorative figurines. They heighten the golden sheen of polished brass with perfection.

In North India, Hanuman is the patron of every settlement and the setting up of his image is the outward and a visible sign of the establishment of a hamlet. Naturally he is the special patron of wandering acrobats, and his shrine is often erected near a well to prevent accidents during the work of sinking the well. As lord of the village, his presence ensures that the water shall turn out sweet. At sialkot (Pakistan), in the story about Venus or Shukr, hanuman is invokde to save devotees from evil spirit and ghosts (Bhootas). The legendary myth is that Rikhi Prigugi had a sone called Shukr and a disciple named Bala Raja. Bala worshipped God so fervently that he promised to appear before him and receive the Pirthi dhan (earth in alms) at his hands. Shukr then told Raja Bal that God was the greatest deveiver that had ever existed on earth and that he should not believe what he said about his incarnation, but Raja Bal put no faith in what Shukr told him, and when God appeared, he took up a lota (jug) to throw water on his hands and gave him three kadams (paces) of land in alms. Shukr, then become a tiny creature and seated himself in the spout of the lota, so that the water stoppped running through the spout. But God had a twig in his hand and this he thrust into the spout, making Shukr blind in his right eye. Shukr then ran away and the water flowed out freely.

God was so displeased at Shukr’s act that he gave him a curse, turned him into a star and cursed him saying that his setting would be very baneful. So when this star is se, a newly married Hindu bride does not go to her father’s or husband’s house, if she chances to be in her husband’s or father’s house, she prefers to go to her husband’s or father’s, when the star is up and on her left hand. If she acts against these rules, she is believed to suffer. To reach her father’s or husband’s house, when it is set or on her right hand, she must start, when it is up or on her left and stay a night outside the village, it is also called the ‘Wives Star’. It appears sometimes in the West, sometimes in the East and at other times not at all.

Ganesh is usually shown with four hands, each one has a special symbolic object in it. One has an ankush (a goad), the second has a trishul ( a three pronged weapon) or an axe made from his own broken tooth, the third has a lotus flower, and the fourth has a rosary. He has many faces; he is sometimes shown with two hands in a dance pose (abhaya and varda mudra). Gajamukh (elephant face), Baraganapati and Tarunaganapati depict him as a child and a young man.

Ganesh Chaturthi - Ganpati Festival 2009

Vinayak has the four arms in which he holds his symbols. In this stance he sometimes or holds it in his trunk and retains the rosary. In his form as Herambeganapati he has five heads and ten hands, three eyes in each face and rides on a lion. The extra eye in each face is between his eyebrows. As Viranvighnesa, he exhibits a martial spirit with several weapons held in his ten hands. Shaktiganapati is shown with his ‘Shakti’ or his consorts Riddhi and Siddhi (success and prosperity) or Buddhi (knowledge) or even Lakshmi sitting on his thigh.

Janmashthami marks the celebration of the birth of Lord Krishna. On the eighth day of the black half of Bhaadra (August) Sri Krishna, the eighth Avatar or incarnation of Vishnu was born. Therefore, this day is known as Janmashthami or Krishna-Jamashthami.

Significance

This auspicious day of the birth of Krishna, the direct manifestation of Vishnu, is celebrated in all parts of India with eclat and great enthusiasm. In the Bhagwad Gita, Krishna declares, “All this universe has been created by me, all things exist in me”. Aujuna addresses him as “the supreme universal spirit, the supreme dwelling, the eternal person, divine, prior to the gods, unborn, omnipresent”. His life is described in great detail in the Purans like Harivamsha and Shrimad Bhagvatam. The circumstances in which he was born were quite peculiar and mysterious. He incarnated himself primarily to destroy evil and wickedness and to establish Dharma.

History

The demon king Kansa was a great and dreaded tyrant, but he loved his sister Devaki, and at her marriage with Vasudev, out of great affection, he drove their marriage chariot. Then, all of a sudden everything went topsy-turvy when an oracle told him that the eighth child of Devaki shall be the cause of his doom and death. At this he would have killed her then and there, but Vasudev intervened and promised to give him over each and every child born to them. They kept their promise, and Kansa killed the six children born to them one after the other. The couple could do nothing except remain mute witness to this act of cruelty, for they were chained inside the prison and kept under strict vigil.

Janmashtami, Krishna Janmashtami Festival

The seventh child born to them was saved by divine grace. The eighth son, Krishna, when he was born, it so happened that with divine grace, the guards fell asleep, their chains loosened and the gates of the prison cell opened.Vasudev took the child Krishna to his friend Nand’s house in Gokul. He entrusted his son with Nand and in exchange carried back the baby girl born to Nand and Yashoda. When Kansa heard of the birth of a girl child, he at once rushed to the prison cell, and lifted the female child high, catching it by the feet. When he was about to dash her against a wall she slipped from Kansa’s grip and assuming the beautiful form of the Divine Mother vanished in the sky saying, “Wretch! thy destroyer is flourishing in Gokul”. People at Gokul were rejoiced at the birth of a son to Nand and Yashoda.Yashoda was quite unaware of the exchange that had taken place during the night. Krishna grew up in Gokul and later killed Kansa.

It appears the worshippers or the followers of the cult empathise woman wiht Nature. The total period of three days of worship, for them, signifies menstrual period of a woman. The menstural secretion ceases on the third day, and from the forth day a woman is considered to be purified after having a post-menstrual bath. So the pre-menstural and post-menstrual periodicity are relevant from the beginning of the Kumari Puja upto the ending of the Durga Puja on the day of Vijaya Dashami (the forth day after the ‘three day’ of worship) when the image of the goddess is immersed in the river.

During the Durga Puja, the most prevalent complexion that is imparted to the image of Durga is shining yellow which symbolises the color of the paddy or wheat which assumes yellowish color on its maturity.

Sculptures have a very old history in India. Excavations of the old civilizations have shown traces of metal sculptures in the land. Different regions within the country differ in choosing the material of sculpture.

Stone and clay sculptures dominate the east region. The south has the master sculptors of wood and metal. The central states have a rare talent of molding the iron. Various kinds of wood are used for making beautiful and intricate sculptures in the south India. These sculptures are made either in one block of wood or by joining more than two pieces together. The glue used for joining them is prepared by grinding tamarind seeds. The use of wood is seen almost in every region however. The techniques of crafting are also different in each region.
The oldest and the most complex technique is the one used in the central Indian state Madhya Pradesh. The tribals of this region use the cire-perdu or the lost wax technique for making various metal sculptures. This method has been in practice for a very long time. The skill is passed from one generation to the other. The eastern state Orissa has in abundance a very soft stone known as soapstone. The artists of this region realize the minutest of their imagination on this gray stone. Kerala, a beautiful coastal state in the south produces the best of the rose wood sculptures of the country. The themes are everywhere related to the deities or the nature.

Apart from making individual idols of the Hindu deities, the sculptors also make idols with mythological significance. We have collected for you the best from every region. Discover and learn the heritage of the Indian sculptures.
